Anapo Valley and the
Necropolis of Pantalica
It is the land where the
crystal waters of Anapo River flow, one of the longest
rivers in Sicily. The valley is born near Mount Lauro and
after a path 50 Km long, it flows into the big harbour of
Syracuse. The valley has been declared "Natural Oriental
Reserve" in 1997 and it includes the municipalities of
Buscemi, Palazzolo Acreide, Ferla, Cassaro, Sortino. The big
land presents several environments. The most charming is
included between Palazzolo, where the river puts in a Canjon,
and Sortino, where it receives the waters of Cava Grande
torrent, showing rare wonderful sceneries. The natural
appeareance, made up by woods which cover the valley, blend
with the landscape, rich in rivers and framed by steps walls
adorned by about 500 prehistoric graves, making the
Necropolis of Pantalica, the major rock settlement all over
Europe, dating back XIII century B.C.. The paths in the
valley allow to reach easily and to visit the most important
sites: Price's Palace (Anaktoron), the Byzantine Village of
Cavetta, Filipporto Necropolis, Bat Cave, and so on... To
reach Anapo Valley and to visit the Necropolis of Pantalica,
you need to go across the highway driving fron junction of
Melilli to Sortino, and you have to follow directions. |
